When was the last time you checked in with yourself to see if your business was actually working for YOU?
Something I’ve been working on a ton in therapy recently has been desire.
Identifying what desire feels like in my body.
Getting clear on what it is that I desire.
Unapologetically asking for and pursuing what I desire.
For so long, I have been living in a state of “good enough.” I’ve ignored what I truly desired for the sake of comfortability because, turns out, identifying what you desire and actually going after it is hard shit.
As I’ve been examining my relationship with desire and making it a priority in how I show up in my life, I’ve been asking myself some important questions about my business that I thought may be helpful for you all to ponder (and journal on) as well:
- Does the way I am showing up in my business actually feel GOOD for me?
- On average, how excited am I to show up to work everyday?
- On average, how are my energy levels at the end of each work day? Am I more often drained/exhausted OR am I more often energized/fulfilled?
- Do I find joy in supporting our clients in the way that we do? Am I showing up for our community and clients in the way that I want?
- If I’m being 100% honest with myself, do I want to support the types of clients we are currently serving?
- What tasks in my business light me up and what tasks do I absolutely dread? Do I spend more time doing what lights me up or doing what I dread?
- Does my schedule feel supportive of my time and energetic capacity? Am I spending time in the way that I want?
- Does my business afford me the ability to do what brings me joy outside of work? Does it enable desire in my personal life?
- Does the way I am operating my business align with my values? How or how not?
- Are there any other projects/businesses that I desire to pursue but haven’t been able to because I feel stuck in what I am currently doing?
As humans trying to do the best we can with what we have, it’s normal to get complacent in the lives (and businesses!) we are currently leading. It feels safe to stay in the “good enough.” To pursue what we desire oftentimes means that we are inviting in change which, for many folks (including myself!), can feel scary. To stay in the “good enough” is to stay in the “known.” To pursue something different for ourselves is to launch ourselves into the “unknown”: a territory that requires a shit-ton of self-trust and surrender.
But here’s the thing: you are deserving of a life (and business!) that actually feels good to you.
Yes, it can be hard to acknowledge and pursue what you desire (hence, all the therapy hehe). And yet, at least for me, the hard work is worth it if the end reward is fulfillment, contentment, and joy.
I know this sounds cheesy, but here’s what I know to be true: we have this one life. A life that has a set end-date that is not determined by our own volition.
We can live this one life in accordance to what society, culture, family systems, clients, co-workers, etc. want for us.
OR we can live this one life (the life that is YOURS, mind you) in accordance to what you want for you.
You have the power to decide what you want for you life/business and go after it. You have the power to make choices for your life/business that bring you JOY.
I don’t know about you, but when I am at the end of my life, I want to look back and feel proud of the life I led. I want to look back and feel content with the choices I made and with how I spent my precious time. I don’t want to look back and feel as though others had more ownership over my life than I did.
So, my friend, what will it be? Will you have the courage to pursue what you want?
I believe in you. We all do 😉
